Reading the title of P. D. Workman’s Gluten-Free Murder, I thought it was going to be another fluffy murder mystery. I was wrong.
Erin Price moves to Bald River Falls after inheriting her Aunt Clementine’s tea house, wanting to turn it into a gluten-free bakery, much to the skepticism of the community. They loved their tea house.
Immediately we are introduced to the quirky inhabitants of Bald River Falls, starting with Officer Terry Piper and his German Shepherd K9 companion, aptly named K9. One by one, unique characters pop in to Erin’s bakery, and we are thrown quickly into the murder of Erin’s crabby business rival, Angela Plaint, owner of The Bake Shoppe. Not only does the mystery hold our attention but so do the serious subjects of this piece of fiction which quickly changed my mind about the fluffiness of the read, though it still had its softness that one expects of a book with this name.
Strange occurrences in Erin’s new gluten-free bakery make her wonder if it is haunted, but that theory is dispelled when she finds a young, terrified woman hiding in her bakery and a feral cat watching her every move. The young woman, Vic, has a story of her own that is timely for the age we live in today.
This mystery held my attention, and I came to care about the characters. The writer’s descriptions pull us into their lives so we feel what they were feeling. This is a well-crafted mystery that will keep you reading late into the night.

Erin Price moves to Bald Eagle Falls, a place where everyone knows everyone as well as everyone else’s business, taking over the store left to her by her aunt to start up a gluten-free bakery. The grand opening is marred by just one thing, the death of her business rival, Angela Plaint. It appears that Angela was poisoned by one of Erin’s cupcakes, making her a prime suspect.
Equipped with cupcakes, her desire for the truth, and new bakery assistant Vicky’s help, Erin goes head-to-head against Detective Terry Piper to solve the murder. Rumors of treasure hunting, drug dealing, and a missing boy swirl around Bald Eagle Falls as Erin tries to sort the clues from the red herrings and find the killer before the killer can take care of her.
